The Q&A is a great chance to learn more about Berkshire Hathaway, the unique culture of the holding company and what is happening at the subsidiaries.

The Q&A is kept in a simple, but powerful format: After an short introduction that gives insights into the current development of the business, shareholders have the chance to ask their questions to the panel on the stocks. Either these questions are curated out of a pre-selection by journalist Becky Quick or are coming directly from shareholder in the CHI Health Center.

To make you this format better accessible, we have created free transcripts:

  • Lawrence A. Cunningham’s book “The Warren Buffett Shareholder: Stories from Inside the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting” is a great way to access to different stories from shareholders about their perspective on the BRK AGM. “The Warren Buffett Shareholder *” gives 43 veterans of the meeting the opportunity to share their stories.
  • Becky Quick of CNBC has produced a very insightful documentary “Warren Buffett – Investor. Teacher.” It is available for free in the Warren Buffett Archive and portrays several shareholders and participants in the Berkshire Hathaway ecosystem.

Where in Omaha does the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting take place?

The Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting takes place in the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska. The Center has a capacity of close to 20,000 seats in the arena and offers additional space in the overfill rooms.

The CHI Health Center is located in the east of Omaha. Many other venues where investing-related events happen, like the Hilton or Marriott, are close by. The Old Market, with many restaurants, is also in walkable distance.

You can find important Berkshire Hathaway-related locations in Omaha on this maps:

What makes Omaha a special location for the BRK Annual Meeting?

Omaha is located on Nebraska’s Eastern border to Iowa. There Omaha is part of the Omaha – Council Bluffs metropolitan area, with more than 1 million inhabitants. Omaha is the home of the headquarters of Berkshire Hathaway, the Kiewit Corporation, Mutual of Omaha and Union Pacific.

Omaha has a special culture of dealing with wealth and money for a city in the US. Wealth is shown very subtle. Status symbols, like expensive cars or big mansions, are rarely seen. Even though, a lot of money is made in Omaha and from Omahians. A part of this wealth is invested back in the city to increase the living quality for all citizens. This behaviour, that is also part of the Buffett philanthropy, contributes to a welcoming culture for the annual meeting.

Furthermore, Berkshire Hathaway has made several locals, who bought their shares early and kept them for the long-term, very wealthy. One public example of many unknown early shareholders is Walter Scott. Walter Scott has founded the Suzanne & Walter Scott foundation that supports charitable causes in Omaha.

The Annual Meeting itself is also a positive factor for Omaha’s local economy. Shareholders spend a ton of money in Omaha for the Berkshire Hathaway and other events. Next to the College World Series, the Berkshire Hathaway weekend is the highlight of the year for tourism in Omaha.

Omaha also has enough capacity to host events for shareholders during the Annual Meeting weekend. Plenty of venues are available for very affordable prices. For instance, running an event in Omaha costs only 1/4 of what it would cost in New York. This makes it quite attractive to “invest” into running an event during the Annual Meeting week.

All these factors combined with the Midwestern friendliness make Omaha a special place for the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting.
